History of the West City Cemetery

The West City Cemetery is located on the corner of Carrolton and Main Streets in the sleepy village of what was initially called West Station. West was founded in 1859 and named for General Absolom Madden West, superintendent of the Mississippi Central Railroad. Land for the town was donated by Alexander Strong Martin and William Francis Green. There was need of a depot every nine miles for water and fuel for the engines, so towns grew up around the train depots.

In 1835, William Hunt Green, bought land in Section 34, Township 16, Range 5 East, from the United States government. Toward the end of the century, Mr. Green gave part of that land for the West Cemetery. Louis Whitfield Howard is reported to have also given land during the establishment of the cemetery. In the 1890s, Richard Arthur Cross donated land on the west side of the cemetery. In the 1930s, Eris Tate donated land on the east side of the cemetery. In the 1940s, Wilna Arnold Brock, who was supervising the cemetery, bought land on the east side of the cemetery, from Robert Riley. In the 1950s, members of the Presbyterian church got permission from the Presbyterian church for land on the east side to be used as part of the cemetery. In 1955, Mrs. Zulma Cross Alexander donated the land north of Cemetery Street. In 1972, a plot was purchased from Mrs. Lida Nabers Heustess, enlarging the cemetery to the northeast. Other people who donated land to the cemetery were Richard West, E.E. Shaw and Mary Bell Tate.

The basis of this information is found in the book, The History of West, Mississippi, by the West Garden Club. According to that publication, the first person interred in the West cemetery was the infant son of Col. & Mrs. J.R. Moore, on Dec. 21, 1878. The fourth person was Margaret Ann Howard, on Jan. 27, 1879. The fifth person was Quintus Horatio Murff, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Duncan L. Murff, on Dec. 7, 1880.

Caring for cemeteries and for the graves of our ancestors is the responsibility of those who come after them. If you are interested in purchasing cemetery lots or donating to the upkeep of the cemetery, please send your information or donations to West Cemetery Fund, PO Box 104, West, MS., 39192
